Haifa: Diversity and Innovation in Education

Today we learned about the diversity of our sister city, Haifa. We started to learn about the religious diversity of Haifa by taking a tour of the famous Bahai Gardens and learning about the Bahai religion.

We also visited the Monastery of Stella Maris that was built by the Carmelite Catholic Christian community that has its origins in the 13th century. Elijah is considered to be the father of the prophets in the Carmelite religion.

In addition to the diversity of the religions of people who live in Haifa, we also learned about the diverse and innovative educational approaches that are exemplified in three centers.

We visited the Gan Sapir/Forest School to see how nature can be brought into the school environment even in the middle of a busy city.

We learned to sing a song in four different languages: Hebrew, Arabic, Sign Language, and English! We had fun singing it with the children!

Together
A Song for Love

Together,
heart to heart,
We'll open and we'll see
The light in the sky.
Together,
heart to heart,
We will open with hope,
 For love

We baked fresh pita on a hot taboon in the garden playground.

Gan Sapir has a magnificent outdoor space including a lot of natural wood. Here is an outdoor theatre.

 An outdoor kitchen.

We were joined by other educators from Boston and Haifa.

Then we visited the Lilach Parenting center to learn how the Haifa Municipality is currently working with 250 families in the Ethiopian community to empower parents to advocate for and engage with their children.

We concluded our day at Gan Native STEM school and explored with Shifra Anteby, Director of Early Education of the Haifa Municipality, and Dr. Orit Goldenberg, the vision for early education that addresses the changes in our world and society.  Joining us at the center are educators from Haifa, and from Tel Aviv.

Below is Eti Applebaum, lead educator of Gan Nativ, with Andrea Shapiro, her partner from Boston.
